- The City of Brooklyn has a Mayor - Council form of government

- The Mayor is elected to a two year term. All councilmen are elected to staggering four year terms.

As the policy makers, the city council passes resolutions and ordinances, approves the budget, approves citizens to boards, and hires the City Clerk and City Treasurer.



Mayor Dennis K Solem (Skip)

Skip Solem moved to Brooklyn from Fairmont, Minnesota when he was in elementary school, because his father took a position with Manatt’s.  He graduated from Brooklyn with the class of 1969.  He worked for GTE for 26 years.  He has also worked at Iowa Telecom and Theissens, where he retired in January of 2013.

Skip married Ruth Kriegel April 2, 1977.  They have 4 grown children Travis, Luke, Jake and Megan and 5 grandchildren.

Skip was elected Mayor in 2009 and re-elected in 2011, 2013, and 2015.  He also serves on the Michael J Manatt Community Center Board and Poweshiek County Emergency Management.  He loves kids and enjoys umpiring Little League games.


Chris Keller

Chris replaced Stockton Harter July 1, 2019.  

Chris is married to Leah Keller and they have 3 children.  He also serves as Fire Chief on the Brooklyn Volunteer Fire Dept. and is on the Brooklyn Telecommunications Board.


Leah Keller

Leah was raised in Brooklyn and graduated from BGM in 2001.  She married Chris Keller in 2003.  She has been a self employed daycare provider for the last 15 years.

Leah enjoys spending time with her family and is involved with many organizations in the community.  She believes you have to be the good you want to see to improve the world.


Les Taylor

Les Taylor was raised in Brooklyn and is a graduate of BGM.  Les has been a member of the Brooklyn Fire Department since 2007.  He became an instructor for the Iowa Fire Safety Training Bureau in 2013.  Les was elected to the Brooklyn City Council in 2014.

Carl Tubbs

Carl Tubbs graduated from Chariton High School in 2002.  He moved to Brooklyn in 2012 when his girlfriend Lynn opened the Classic Deli.  Carl serves as Secretary on the Brooklyn Volunteer Fire Department.  He also volunteers for the East Poweshiek County Ambulance Service, where he serves as  President.  He was elected to City Council in 2015.

Carl enjoys fishing, camping and spending time with his daughters Madison and Madilyn.  He also enjoys watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, St. Louis Cardinals and the Oakland Raiders.  He is currently employed with COSTCO Wholesale in Iowa City.
