FORM OF GOVERNMENT

- The City of Brooklyn has a Mayor - Council form of government

- The Mayor is elected to a two year term. All councilmen are elected to staggering four year terms.

As the policy makers, the city council passes resolutions and ordinances, approves the budget, approves citizens to boards, and hires the City Clerk and City Treasurer.

 

MEET THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL

MAYOR: Les Taylor

Les was raised in Brooklyn and is a graduate of BGM.  Les has been a member of the Brooklyn Fire Department since 2007.  He became an instructor for the Iowa Fire Safety Training Bureau in 2013.  Les was elected to the Brooklyn City Council in 2014 and became Mayor in 2022.

 

Matt Elsbury

Current term expires - December 31, 2023

Matt replaced Cheryl Blom as a council member in September 2022, after she moved out of town.

Matt is married to Helen and they are raising 3 children.  He is a member of the Brooklyn Volunteer Fire Dept.   He enjoys outdoor activities and cheering for the Green Bay Packers. 

 

Andy Day

Andy joined the council November 7, 2022 replacing Les Taylor as Les became Mayor.  Andy also serves on the Brooklyn Volunteer Fire Department and the East Poweshiek Ambulance.

 

Willy Wonick

Current term expires - December 31, 2025

Willy graduated from HLV in 2006. He works for Poweshiek Water Association. He enjoys spending time with his wife Nicole, his daughter Lilly, and 3 stepsons.  Willy loves sports and is an assistant boys' basketball coach for BGM.  He adores his dogs.  When in season you can find him turkey hunting.  He cheers on the Michigan State Spartans, unlike the rest of us who love the Hawkeyes.

 

Scott Hawkins

Scott graduated from BGM in 1997.  Along with his wife Alyssa he is raising 5 active children.  Scott was a founder of the Brooklyn Neighborhood Watch and is very active in issues dealing with law enforcement. He is an avid deer hunter and loves to hunt with family and friends. 

 

Samantha DeGeorge

My family moved to Brooklyn in 2001.  I graduated from BGM in 2008.  In my spare time I enjoy doing volunteer work.
