BGM Community Schools
The BGM School District encompasses approximately 141 square
miles within the rural communities of Brooklyn, Guernsey and Malcom located in
east central Iowa. Residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural areas
are found within the boundaries of the school district. Enrollment is
steady with approximately 675 students, 52 teachers, an activity director and 29
support staff.
The district is governed by a seven-member board of education
where members are elected at large.
Location and Facilities
BGM High School is located at 1090 Jackson Street. This site includes the
Elementary, Jr. High, and Sr. High classrooms along with two gymnasiums, stage
and indoor swimming pool. This pool is used by students, area residents and for
summer programs.
BGM Community Schools is a progressive district that believes in their
investment in students' lives. The High School completed a $1 million
rehabilitation and modernization of the entire exterior in 2004. This
comes shortly after the building of a new $5.8 million elementary school
completed in 2002.
The new elementary school contains 28 classrooms, a media center, music and art
rooms, two computer labs, an Interactive Cable Network (ICN) classroom, a
gymnasium and a large multi-purpose area.
The BGM Booster Club completed a 60 x 135 foot service building/wellness center
in 2004. The Wellness Center encompasses 4,500 square feet and houses
fitness and weight-training equipment as well as a wrestling room. The
3,600 square foot service center area is used as a maintenance area for buses
and other vehicles and for storage of vehicles and equipment.
Citizens Scholarship Foundation
The non-profit Citizen
Scholarship Foundation (CSF) was formed with the support of the residents of
the three communities. CSF enables each senior student to have a chance for a
higher education. The foundation offers scholarships to graduating seniors;
however, they also offer loans to older graduated students of the school
district for a "second chance" and mini-grants to teachers who try new
ideas within BGM school system. Website for CSF of BGM is

Parent/Teachers Association
The Parent-Teachers' Association was an outgrowth of the
Mother's club and was organized in 1919. The organization consisted of both
fathers and mothers and was very active. They began the distribution of milk to
schoolchildren during school hours, a practice that is continued today. The
committee also bought the playground equipment, a practice that has continued
on.
After a lapse in time, the PIE (Partners in Education) group was formed in 1994.
Today the group consists of 68 members, both men and women.
Some of the fundraising activities in the past have included Popcorn Day, Pizza
Hut cards, Cookie Day, Book Fair, Pie Sales and Apple Day. All proceeds from
their fundraisers will be for the playground at the new elementary school site.
