Brooklyn Volunteer Fire Department
First fire engine and other fire fighting equipment were purchased in May of 1887.
Brooklyn had two fire wards in 1895.
In 1956 pasture land was donated to the City for a new building by Coe Manatt and
his sister Nellie Manatt Sherwood at the current site. In 1976 three stalls were
added, which one stall was funded and occupied by East Poweshiek County Ambulance
service.
Currently Brooklyn Volunteer Fire Department has 21 members. Fund raising events
includes Annual Fish Fry, Pancake Breakfast and Firemen’s Dance. They’ll be celebrating
their 125th ANNIVERSARY in August 2012.



East Poweshiek County Ambulance
East Poweshiek County Ambulance service was organized in 1976. In 1990s the ambulance
service built its own 2-stall building near the fire department building.
Services are provided by a full-time paramedic, EMTs and drivers. East Poweshiek
County Ambulance is supported by paid services, county funding and volunteer contributions.

New Public Safety Building
Brooklyn’s new Public Safety Building was constructed in Spring
of 2010, which houses
both the Brooklyn Volunteer Fire Department
and East Poweshiek Ambulance Service.
City of Brooklyn received
an I JOBS Grant from the State of Iowa in the amount of
$573,000
to go towards the new building project.
