Brooklyn, Iowa has cornered the market on location. The beautiful town of Brooklyn is located two miles north of Interstate 80 (Exit 197), which runs from the east coast to the west coast. Interstate 35 is only an hour to the west and the Avenue of the Saints Highway is only an hour to the east, along with major U.S. Highways and State roads. Within 300 mile radius cities such as Chicago, Kansas City, Omaha, Minneapolis and St. Louis are located.
Brooklyn is only an hour drive from Iowa’s three largest Universities; The University of Iowa, Iowa State University, and The University of Northern Iowa. Other colleges such as Coe College, Drake, Grinnell College, and William Penn, along with Area Community Colleges of Iowa Valley, Kirkwood, Indian Hills and Hawkeye Tech are within an hour or less driving distance from Brooklyn.
Brooklyn’s location was an important factor in the Chamber of Commerce and the Economic Development’s decision to begin an industrial park. Its location makes it more viable because it is only two miles north of I-80 and located midway between Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, Cedar Falls and Ottumwa.
A cooperative effort by institutions in Brooklyn enabled the park to become a reality.
The T.I.P. Rural Electric Cooperative purchased the 32 acres while the City of Brooklyn provided the sewer and water to the park. The City also annexed the land and made it a tax increment financing (TIF) district. This allows the city to use tax money collected from the TIF District to pay for improvements at the park.
A group called New Brooklyn Development exists to give prospective industries or companies choices in the form of build to lease, lease purchase, as well as other options.
